Book Club Thursday: Getting to Know Us!

Welcome back to Book Club Thursday!

This week we are doing...

Our topic is: WTF (things that make us think, what the hell!)

When I first heard we were doing this topic I thought to myself, holy shit do I have a lot to say. I also know I thought about what it would be that I would say. Of course I didn't write it down so here I am with a blank mind. (something that happens way to often. don't laugh!)

I have sometime before this posts but one of things I promised myself last year was that I would try to always be one month ahead. So I'm going to wing it and maybe come back and change what I don't like.

Yeah, like that will happen! Wishful thinking on my part.

So I'm going to break down what I causes me to stop and think to myself, really!!! in the book world.

One of my biggest issues with series is when they are dropped and you do have any reasons why. The author says nothing, the publisher says nothing. Hell, even the book world says nothing.

This drives me crazy! It also makes me not want to read series anymore and believe I'm a series girl. I get that something series even though they are great to me don't mean they are making money. Fine, don't publishes them, but inform us so we know that and story waiting for them.

Another thing I hate is when a series starts out in paperback and then moves on the hardcover. I've got to tell you that I've gotten to a point in my life where I'm done with the hardcovers. I really don't believe romance should ever be in hardcover. If you want a series to be special, do trade size. The thought of spending say $18-$30 on a hardcover only to read it and finish it in a few authors sucks. I get why with general fictions, not as many of those readers buy like we do.

Let's talk websites. This is one that really irritates me. I hate when you go to a authors website and find that it hasn't been updated in six months or longer. No information on what's coming out when we should be seeing it. This really pisses me off with authors that write series. This kinda ties into what I was talking about above.

As a reader I want to know what's going on with the series I love. Hell, I want to know when your next book is coming out even if you don't write series. I personally write down what's come out and when for my notes both for the blog and me personally. I would love to say that I get ARC's of everything I want to read but it doesn't happen that way. I still buy a ton of books a year.

I would also love a excerpt on authors websites. I have to tell you I'm not a fan of 1st person so when I'm forced to read it like I've bought it and didn't know it was that and don't want to waste the money I'm already going into the book with a bad taste in my mouth which I would hope it would but might be reflected in my review. I'm only human.

Lately I've passed on so many new to me authors because I don't know if their books are 1st person or not. Yes, I could email them (more often then not I get no replies at all) or I could reach out to them on Facebook but why should I? Why am I working so hard when I already have a ton of authors to read that I know in what form they write?

For the most part I'm pretty happy with these. I do believe that authors should be using them to keep us more informed. But for the most part that does happen. I know that authors are very busy people and need time to write instead of being on Facebook are other social media networks but they are also selling themselves and need to network with us. It's so easy nowadays to have someone help you ould with Facebook and other social media formats.

Be smart and do so.

Also make sure to not ignore people when they ask you a question. With so many authors out there to buy it's very easy to pass one by because they made you made.

I know as someone who runs a Facebook page for my blog I try very hard to make sure to post at least four to five times a week. I do that and some.

Let's not forget groups. These are great but when the author can't be found anymore it really sucks. Or when they close one down without a word that pisses me off! Yes these are really little things in life but when a big part of your life is about something they aren't so little anymore.

What about you? What's your WTF moments in our book world? Tell me do you agree with what I said or think I'm sweating the small stuff? I'd love to know what you think. As always thank you for visiting and happy reading! ♡

  1. Outdated or lack of websites/social media is annoying! Especially excerpts. I too need a feel of books sometimes before I commit to buying

  2. I love Twitter and Facebook for interacting with authors. But it's really annoying when they post updates and NEVER interact with readers. Why bother having social media if you aren't going to use it. I love series and am more likely to read a series of books than a standalone.

    1. I agree with you. I don't need them talking with us every second I get that they need to work but once a day or a few times a week is nice.

  3. oh my gosh ....can I say how much I agree with this post!!

First off, author websites drive me bananas especially when they rarely update them and I am like well why do you even have a website if you aren't going to update it more than six months, it seems a bit pointless. We like to know what is going on right?

As far as series I really hate it when they suddenly get dropped with no word. One that really made me mad was the gods of the night series by Nina Bangs. It had three books and the plot of the world building was growing and kinda left us hanging and then she just drops the series with no word of why so i haven't read her since, mostly because I am still mad (I know I am crazy but its frustrating)

I also am like you that I think romance shouldn't ever be in hardcover. As much as I love hardcover at times, to go from paperback to hardcover is just a means of making more money from your readers. So when that happens I wait for the copy at the library, because its not worth paying for unless its a favorite author than I might but its really annoying.

    1. It's so funny but one of the series that really pisses me off is Bangs. I loved that series and felt they didn't give it a chance. She said she's going to self publish them. I think they did her a dissevers by having some many of her books in trade. People are cheap. I only have a certain amount of money to spend on books and if they go to hardcover I have to really think about if I'd want to buy one book or two, maybe three. It sucks when you really like them. I end up then waiting for the paperback and then by then I'm hooked on someone new and push it back until the next thing I know I have four of the series sitting on the bookshelf.

  4. LOL oh yes the first one. That drives me crazy. Or when an author just...disappears. One of mine I used to love just fell off the face of the world after a release. No one knows even other authors in my state (she was one of my locals). Just...gone.

I also don't do serials because of that. Sylvia Day abandoned one of hers after another series took off and it's been years and man that makes me mad.

    1. I know the series you are talking about. I was a bookseller back then and let me tell you I had to hear it from my customers. In fact she did that with more then one series. I get when publishers don't want a series anymore, just let us know she we aren't wait forever for it.
